When people talk about delicacies of the season in Tango, the first food they think of is Tori-gai. (https://www.uminokyoto.jp/feature/detail.php?spid=21) Tori-gai is seasonal delicacy only available between spring and early summer (late April to late June) in Tango region.  They are the first in the country to develop a technology to mass produce and raise young Auriga clams.  Tori-gai is a brand from Kyoto Prefecture that is carefully raised in the Maizuru bay for nearly two years.  The general size is around 6cm, but Tango Tori-gai is large, over 8.5cm.  You can purchase Tango Tori-gai, which have thick flesh and just the right amount of chewiness.  Sweetness and flavor spread in your mouth with every bite.  You can purchase Tango Tori-gai from mail order site  “Umi no Kyoto City Market”. (kitakyoto-ippin.com) You can also easily purchase a wide range of products from seven cities and towns in northern Kyoto Prefecture, such as seasonal fresh food, processed product.

Of course, you can also eat Tango Tori-gai at local restaurants.  If you have a chance to go to Maizuru, please visit "Maizuru Red Brick Park" Japan's oldest existing steel-framed brick building is must see.  We also recommend the ``Maizuru Maritime Self-Defense Force Curry,'' which is a reproduction of the curry served aboard Maritime Self-Defense Force escort ships.
